The hamburger graphic organizer is a teaching technique I often go back to when teaching the structure of a paragraph. It is a tested and approved strategy by many teachers.
The formatting is simple. The top bun represents your introduction. The bottom bun represents the paragraph’s conclusion. This is a good visual to provide understanding for the introduction and conclusion enclosing the paragraph through mirror images of one another while still being slightly different. The meat of the burger would be the main idea. Finally, the tomatoes, lettuce, cheese, and onions are the supporting details that should provide further elaboration to your paragraph’s main topic.
Reading Rockets is a great a resource for lessons and free hamburger paragraph templates: Paragraph Hamburger/Reading Rockets
